The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change

Most governments rely on and feed data into the scientists working around the world to assess climate change. Its worth remembering that Reports that are dated 2007 have been based on data of around 2004 to give colleagues an opportunity to peer-review the outcomes. This tries to ensure the recommendations in the Reports are based on as accurate picture of scientific evidence as possible. But, in their efforts to be free from bias their observations are typically a couple of years out of date - and this at a time when scientists are concerned that impacts are occuring at a faster rate that anticipated.

Local Government Association : Climate Change is the Biggest Threat to our Long-Term Prosperity

In 1997, local government came together and created the Local Government Association to be its voice in the national arena. Based in Westminster, close to the Houses of Parliament and Whitehall, the LGA is a voluntary lobbying organisation, acting as the voice of the local government sector, and an authoritative and effective advocate on its behalf.

What advice do they give Councils like ours? Read the Final Report of the Climate Change Commissioners on our "downloads" section of this site. On climate change they say, "Climate change is the biggest long-term threat to our prosperity and well-being - managing the threat requires a radical decarbonisation of the global economy, and significant technological change away from the use of fossil fuels. This is not only about large-scale action at international and national levels, but local and individual action too. Councils are uniquely placed to tackle climate change and are the link between national aspirations and individual action. Through their Local Area Agreements, over 90% of councils have adopted targets to reduce emissions in their own operations or across their local area or targets to adapt to the effects of climate change."
