About
Action on Climate Change
Action on Climate Change was started in November 2006 to give Islanders an opportunity to come together and discuss issues related to climate change.
This is a non-political, privately organised group wanting to find out more about what we can do and what the Island is doing to get to grips with the issue of climate change. Speakers at the first meeting included Andrew Turner MP; Jim Fawcett - Principal Planning Officer, IW Council; Hugh Walding - Friends of the Earth; Joan Kirby - President of Island WI; Father Bruce Barnes - Roman Catholic Dean of the Island; Mark Chiverton - UNISON and Brian Taylor - Organiser.
To start with we set up a website called "thewightcounts" with Andrew Turner's support to share information and to advertise meetings and out of that the "IsleCutCarbon" website developed. It's also funded by local people and sees benefits in retaining its independence.
Action on Climate Change
is very concerned at what it sees as a lack of committment, at national as well
as local government level, to take actions that are urgently needed to address
the impacts that climate change, resource depletion, diminishing agricultural
returns and population growth will have on our Island way of life.
Our logo includes a stopwatch to remind us all that time is running out if we are to try and mitigate the worst effects of climate change. Increasingly we see the word adaptation which allows issues to be put on the back-burner. If we are lucky we have a decade in which to make the changes in lifestyle and energy consumption to give our grandchildren the experience of the natural world that we enjoy. Some very respected scientists feel even 10 years may be too long.
Action on Climate Change strongly supports the work of the Footprint Trust and you can link to their site from here or their logo.
